LAX Ambassador/Airport Guide Position
Calendar Year 2005
Application Information and Filing Dates

The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), through its Community Relations Division, employs part-time Airport Guides to work as “LAX Ambassadors”, providing information and assistance to LAX passengers and greeters. Specific information regarding the position duties, qualifications, pay scale, and hours appears on the opposite page.

Due to the high number of inquiries received regarding the application process for employment with the LAX Ambassador Program, the LAWA Community Relations Division has designated specific filing dates for LAX Ambassador/Airport Guide employment applications. For calendar year 2005, these dates are the following:

Filing Period 1:

Opens: February 9 at 9:00 a.m.
Closes: February 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Filing Period 2:

Opens: April 5 at 9:00 a.m.
Closes: April 12 at 4:00p.m.

Filing Period 3:

Opens: September 13 at 9:00 a.m.
Closes: September 20 at 4:00 p.m.

The LAWA Community Relations Division reserves the right to modify these filing dates as needed and encourages interested applicants to stay informed of any such changes by periodically visiting the LAWA website [www.lawa.org/lax/ambassadors.cfm]. Applications are to be filed using a current City of Los Angeles Application for Employment Form. This application form is available for pick-up only at:

City Employment Applications may also be downloaded from the City’s Website [www.lacity.org] by selecting “Jobs Available” from the home page.

During the specified LAX Ambassador Program filing periods, completed and originally signed City Employment Applications are to be delivered to the LAWA Community Relations Division or LAWA Human Resources Division within the specified filing dates. Mailed applications received before or after the filing period will be returned to the applicant. Please note that applications will not be accepted at the LAX Ambassador Office. At the close of each filing period applications will be reviewed and qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews as job vacancies arise.

Position Title: Airport Guide
Hours: Approximately 18 hours a week, Monday-Sunday
Pay Scale: Begins at $13.76 per hour
Shift choices: Shifts available are 5:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Must be able to work five 7-hour shifts in a two week period. One of those shifts must be a Saturday or Sunday. There are limited open slots so ambassadors must be flexible with their schedules.

Airport Guide - Position Description

Duties:

  • Act as liaison to LAX air carriers and the traveling public by providing information on general airline customer service and security procedures (including, but not limited to, handicap services, appropriate carry-on and check-in luggage, passenger screening procedures, etc.).
  • Provide curbside assistance and ground transportation assistance.
  • Answer general questions asked about the airport’s use and function, and record the type of questions handled and number of people assisted during a shift.
  • Explain and direct the traveling public to various services and facilities within the airport.
  • Explain the various operations and facilities of LAX to the traveling public.
  • Report any observed malfunctioning airport public services (i.e. escalators, elevators, public phones, change machines, restrooms, public address systems, flight information boards, etc).

Skills and abilities needed include:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the traveling public and all levels of airport staff including co-workers, airline employees, and management.
  • Possess three years or more of customer service experience. Must demonstrate experience in application in giving proactive, detailed exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to take initiative and use interpersonal skills to address customer concerns with minimal supervision.
  • Good physical condition in order to be able to remain standing during an entire shift.
  • Aviation or travel related experience is helpful, but not required.
  • Ability to speak in a second language is helpful, but not required.
