LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS HONORED FOR AIR QUALITY PROGRAM

(LOS ANGELES – October 3, 2000) Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA’s) Air Quality Program has been selected by Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) as winner of its 2000 Environmental Achievement Award for larger airports. LAWA is being honored this week during ACI-NA’s 9th Annual Regional Conference and Exhibition in New York City, October 1-4, 2000.

LAWA’s program is dedicated to implementing environmental mitigation programs that reduce the impacts LAWA's airport operations have on the environment. The program is divided into three categories: an alternative fuel vehicle program for employees and passengers; electrification and co-generation of LAWA's facilities to provide electricity, heating and air conditioning; and a vehicle trip reduction program focusing on employees, passengers, and ground transportation operators who serve the public.

"The success of our Air Quality Program is one of our most significant achievements and an example of LAWA’s strong commitment to help clean the air in Los Angeles," said Roger Johnson, LAWA’s deputy executive director of Environmental Affairs. We plan to continue adopting practices and technologies and also to explore new partnerships that will build on this success."

"The ACI-NA Environmental Achievement Award is designed to highlight the efforts of our members to not only be good environmental neighbors, but to develop programs above and beyond current regulations. The awards spotlight airports which foster cooperation, save money, and share their ideas with others," said Bonnie Wilson, ACI-NA’s vice president of airport facilities and services.

ACI-NA represents local, regional, and state governing bodies that own and operate commercial airports in the United States and Canada. ACI-NA member airports enplane more than 98 percent of the domestic and virtually all the international airline passenger and cargo traffic in North America. More than 300 aviation-related businesses are also members of the association, which is the largest of the six worldwide regions of Airports Council International.

Los Angeles World Airports is a self-supporting department of the City of Los Angeles, which owns and operates a world-class system of four airports: Los Angeles International, Ontario International, Palmdale Regional, and Van Nuys.
