VAN NUYS AIRPORT MANAGER RECEIVES FAA AWARD

(Van Nuys, CA)- Van Nuys Airport Manager Selena B. Birk will receive an award from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for her work in overseeing a state-of-the-art security identification badging system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Recognizing the importance of that contribution to the aviation industry and recommending it to other airports nationwide, the FAA will present her with a certificate of appreciation at the Board of Airport Commissioners’ regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at 10 a.m.

Before coming to Van Nuys Airport in February of this year, Birk headed a 54-member staff as the Airfield Permits Bureau Chief for LAX. In that position, she developed standardized employment background verification procedures for 42,000 airport-wide employees who are issued airport badges as a condition of their work at LAX. She also coordinated the efforts of nearly 700 aviation business and government agencies and managed airfield issues concerning security access control, licensing agreements for all airport-related organizations, and operating permits for air carriers and motor vehicles.

Birk is the first woman to be appointed an airport manager in the Los Angeles World Airports system, which includes Van Nuys Airport, LAX, Ontario International Airport and Palmdale Regional Airport.
