JOB SHADOW DAY AT VAN NUYS AIRPORT OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

(Van Nuys, CA)- Students from the Airlines Occupations class of James Monroe High School will participate in Job Shadow Day on Wednesday, March 29, for an inside look at the many jobs and types of businesses that flourish at Van Nuys Airport, the world’s busiest general aviation airport. The program is in conjunction with "Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2000" sponsored by Junior Achievement of Southern California.

Administrative, operations, public relations and other personnel at Van Nuys Airport, one of four airports owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, will share their professional experience with the students. "It’s truly a hands-on opportunity because the students actually become part of the work environment for a few hours," said Van Nuys Airport Manager Selena Birk. "We’re looking forward to having them here, and we hope the experience will inspire them to consider careers in aviation."

As an important financial and vocational hub in Southern California, Van Nuys Airport pumps approximately $1.2 billion into the local economy and directly or indirectly supports an estimated 10,000 aviation and non-aviation jobs in the region’s economy.

Airport employees hope to create an experience that is both fun and academic for the students. Other educational outreach programs at the airport include the Adopt-A-School program with Gault Street Elementary School and a free, award-winning tour program for all ages.
