Ontario International Airport (ONT) Recycling Program

· The ONT Recycling Program is a comprehensive airport-wide recycling program being implemented in three phases. Phase One is the implementation of a mixed paper recovery program. Phase Two is the implementation of terminal-specific and ONT maintenance yard programs. Phase Three is comprised of programs targeted towards aircraft and tenant offices.

· Phase One, ONT’s mixed paper and old corrugated cardboard (OCC) recycling program, began in July 1999 and specifically targeted ONT administrative offices. Educational materials, seed bouquets, reusable mugs and individual mixed paper recycling collection containers were distributed to employees. Since July, approximately 2,200 pounds of mixed paper were recycled per week. It is estimated that Phase One of the program is diverting close to 60 percent of paper wastes generated in ONT’s administrative offices.

· Phase Two includes the implementation of a mixed paper recycling program for ONT passengers, ticket counters and concession areas, and terminal offices, which began November 15, 1999.

Phase Two also includes the reconfiguration of trash and recycling containers at ONT. ONT is currently in the process of purchasing new portable compactors for Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, retrofitting two existing compactors with structural tubing to prevent spills on the airfield, monitoring the amount of trash in containers to maximize disposal savings, and reusing old compactors.

The third aspect of Phase Two is called "grasscycling." ONT generates approximately 14 bags of grass clippings per week while remaining grass is left on the ground to enrich the soil. "Grasscycling" accounts for the recycling of approximately 300 tons of grass clippings per year.

· Phase Three, ONT’s aircraft and tenant recycling programs, are scheduled to begin in early-2000. Programs for both aircraft and tenant-leased spaces will be implemented using the same approach as the terminal programs.

· The City of Ontario donated a recycling container trailer – estimated to cost $10,000 – to ONT for use in ONT’s Recycling Program.

· ONT kicked off Phase Two of its airport-wide recycling program on November 15,1999, in conjunction with America Recycles Day.

· ONT’s Recycling Program complies with Assembly Bill 939, which requires ONT to reach a 50 percent diversion rate by 2000. As of October 1999, ONT is at 40 percent.
