ONTARIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO BUILD NEW AIR CARGO FACILITY

Ontario, California (March 12, 2001) -- B&B Contractors, Inc., dba Hafner/Bergman, Chino, has been awarded a $679,682 contract to convert an aircraft hangar at Ontario International Airport (ONT) into a new facility for air cargo operations.

"The air cargo renovation project at Ontario International is another step in Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) commitment to developing the airport to its fullest potential to meet Southern California’s increasing demand for air services," said LAWA Executive Director Lydia H. Kennard. "Ontario International is in a strong position to handle more air cargo. We will do everything possible to accommodate the airport’s growth by continuing to develop its infrastructure."

The new air cargo facility will accommodate up to three tenants. The project includes construction of new office spaces, utilities to support the offices, a truck loading dock, and additional modifications, such as roll-up doors in the existing hangar doors.

ONT’s cargo operations are currently conducted in the airport’s Chaffey Hangar, which is no longer adequate for ONT’s increasing cargo operations. When construction of the new air cargo facility is completed, tenants in the Chaffey Hangar will be relocated to the new facility.

"Ontario International today handles more than 500,000 tons of cargo, an 87 percent increase since 1990," said Kennard. "The airport is capable of handling much more domestic and international cargo. Therefore, we are preparing the airport for this potential growth by building out the necessary facilities to support it."

The four-month construction period is scheduled to begin April 15.

ONT is located approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles in Southern California’s Inland Empire region and is owned and operated by LAWA, a Los Angeles city department, which also owns and operates Los Angeles International, Van Nuys, and Palmdale Regional Airports.
