STEIN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS

 

(Los Angeles, CA - August 28, 2001) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today elected Theodore Stein, Jr., as president and Dr. Warren Valdry as vice president. Today’s action follows the August 10 confirmation by the Los Angeles City Council of seven commissioners appointed to the board by Mayor James K. Hahn.

Stein is returning to the board after recently serving on the City’s Harbor Commission, and is joined by returning Commissioners Cheryl Petersen and Dr. Valdry. Leland Wong, who also has served on the board twice before, is rejoining the body.

Eileen N. Levine, Armando Vergara, and Ruth Mahala Brown Walter are joining the board for the first time.

Stein, a practicing attorney and a real estate developer, most recently served as president of the Harbor Commission from 1998 to 2000. He was president of the Board of Airport Commissioners from 1993 to 1996, and served as senior policy advisor to former Mayor Richard J. Riordan. From 1988 to 1993 he was a member of the Los Angeles Planning Commission, where he served as president from 1992-1993. His new term on the Airports Commission extends until June 30, 2006.

Dr. Valdry is an educator and president of Valdry's Investment and Land Development Group. Appointed to the board in 1993, Dr. Valdry represents the board on the Commissioners Committee of Airports Council International-North America. His term ends June 30, 2004.

Wong served as a member of the Airports Commission from 1991 to 1993, where he was president in 1993. As a member of the L.A. Harbor Commission, he held the post as president from 1995 to 1998. He was reappointed to the Board of Airport Commissioners in 1998 and completed his service in 2000. This current appointment is until June 30, 2005. Since 1987 Wong has held the post of California Division Director of Government and Community Relations for the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program.

Petersen has served on the commission since September 2000 and served on the City Fire Commission from May 1999 to August 2000. She was most recently manager of planning and evaluation during her 18-year tenure at Atlantic Richfield Company. Her reappointment continues until her term ends June 30, 2002.

Eileen N. Levine is a health educator with experience at several agencies including Valley Hospital Medical Center in Van Nuys, UCLA, and the County of Los Angeles. She fills the remainder of a term that ends June 30, 2004.

Armando Vergara, is a labor leader serving on the county and state organizational levels and a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, where he was a general executive board member of its eighth district. He fills the remainder of a term that ends June 30, 2003.

Ruth Mahala Brown Walter, an active member of the Westchester community, has served in a variety of endeavors including education, the YMCA, and cable television programming. She was most recently the volunteer manager of the Food Pantry LAX. She fills the remainder of a term that ends June 30, 2005.
