LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND FAA TO HOLD SUMMER AVIATION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

(Los Angeles, California -- June 27, 2001) Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Aero Club of California are co-sponsoring this year's Aviation Career Education (ACE) free, week-long educational program for local-area high school students to introduce them to careers in aviation. The program will be held August 6 -10 and is in addition to two Junior ACEACE Academy weeks scheduled in July for middle school students.

The program provides participants with a basic understanding of career opportunities within the aviation industry, as well as general knowledge about LAX. Students receive facility tours and briefings by airport-wide employees and tenants. The students also will spend a day with American Airlines and the FAA.

"We are excited about providing students with the opportunity again to learn more about the aviation industry," said William Withycombe, administrator of the FAA Western-Pacific Region.

Lydia H. Kennard, executive director of Los Angeles World Airports which owns and operates LAX, said, "The demand for air transportation will continue to grow with an expected doubling of passengers in the Southern California region to more than 160 million annual passengers by 2015 from today's 80 million. Transportation by air will be the mode of choice for travelers in the future. Students who receive exposure to the aviation industry can prepare themselves to take advantage of the wide range of career options the industry has to offer."

The program is open to all high school students in areas surrounding LAX, including El Segundo, Westchester, Playa del Rey, Hawthorne, Lennox, Inglewood, Venice, and Los Angeles. For more information, contact Barbara Keller at the FAA at (310) 725-3804 or Diana Sanchez in the LAX Community Relations Division at (310) 646- 5742 or via e-mail at dsanchez@lawa.org. Application deadline is July 9, 2001.
