LAX REMEMBRANCE EVENTS SET FOR SEPT. 10, 11

 

Officials at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) are commemorating the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, with two public events at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): a candlelight vigil and memorial plaque dedication on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and a "Circle of Unity" ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 10
EVENT: Candlelight vigil and dedication of "In Memory of September 11, 2001" bronze plaque inscribed with names of victims aboard the four California-bound flights (three to LAX). Members of airport community will read names of victims. While a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter/paramedic plays bagpipe, Gateway LAX pylons will begin illuminating a new red, white and blue lighting design developed pro bono for this anniversary by lighting artist-designer Paul Tzanetopoulos. The patriotic lighting design sequences will be lit through midnight Sept. 11.
TIME: 9 p.m.
LOCATION: LAX Flagpole Courtyard located at the entrance of LAX (intersection of Century and Sepulveda Boulevards

Media availability:
Lighting designer-artist Paul Tzanetopoulos will be available beginning 8 p.m. for one-one-one media interviews prior to and after the ceremony to discuss development of new patriotic design sequence.
MEDIA PARKING: Los Angeles World Airports Administration Building Southside Employees Parking Lot across from Terminal 7 (entrance gate is on Center Way across from the Administration Building) and in the building's Visitors Parking Lot (entrance gate indicated by sign located on left side of Lower/Arrivals Level Roadway)
TV POOL COVERAGE FROM TOP OF ADMINISTRATION BUILDING TOWER:

Wednesday, Sept. 11
EVENT: Circle of Unity at LAX with a moment of silence at the historic Theme Building. The public, airport employees and passengers will be invited to form a silent human "Circle of Unity" around the Theme Building -- recreating the one held last Sept. 14, 2001, the first full day of flight activity after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The moment of silence will coincide with other moments occurring throughout Los Angeles. Small U.S. flags will be distributed.
TIME: Noon
LOCATION: The lawn surrounding the Theme Building in the heart of LAX.
MEDIA PARKING: Broadcast-equipped media vans ONLY can park along the northside curb in the traffic lane adjacent to the Theme Building. Others can park for free in nearest metered, open-air Lots 2 and 6 across from same numbered terminals or pay for parking.
