FIRM TO STUDY USE OF FLYAWAY CONCEPT IN INGLEWOOD
(Los Angeles, California - May 21, 2002) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today selected Gerson/Overstreet Architects, Culver City, to conduct a conceptual planning and analysis study to identify key resources necessary for a FlyAway terminal in Inglewood that would serve Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with high frequency shuttle bus service.
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), which owns and operates LAX and three other Southern California airports, awarded the $111,292 contract in connection with a memorandum of understanding with the City of Inglewood. The memorandum calls for both cities to pursue and implement measures to study and mitigate the environmental impact on Inglewood of existing and potential future LAX operations and improvements.
"We will determine the physical and economic resources available in Inglewood that would make a FlyAway location beneficial to LAX. A similar facility at Van Nuys Airport has proven to alleviate traffic congestion and promote a cleaner environment. An Inglewood terminal could have a similar impact," said Kim Day, deputy executive director of Project and Facilities Development.
LAWA agreed to study whether a FlyAway bus terminal within Inglewood would be feasible because of its close proximity to the airport, availability of prospective sites and airport access.
The Van Nuys FlyAway serves LAX with 24-hour bus service seven days a week.
