LAX REPORTS 2001 YEAR-END PASSENGER, CARGO VOLUMES; MONTHLY VOLUMES CONTINUE UPWARD TREND FROM SEPTEMBER 11

(Los Angeles, California -- January 24, 2002) Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officials today released year-end statistics showing the airport served 61,595,509 passengers and processed 1,956,340 tons of air cargo in 2001. These figures represent 91.52 percent of the 67,303,182 passengers and 87.03 percent of the 2,247,833 tons of air cargo the airport processed in 2000. Airport officials note that while 2001 passenger and air cargo totals approximate those in 1998, both areas have shown improvement month-to-month since the period immediately following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs) closed last year at 738,114, or 94.22 percent of the 783,433 operations in 2000. This approximates the airport's operational level in 1995. Declines in landings and takeoffs were posted for all types of aircraft: air carrier (-7.39 percent), air taxi or commuter (-1.22 percent), military (-10.94 percent), and general aviation business and charter aircraft (-5.07 percent).

The monthly passenger traffic in December 2001 was 4,352,194, or 80.21 percent of the 5,425,737 passengers in December 2000. The monthly passenger volumes have steadily improved since September 11, when the airport was closed for an unprecedented 2-1/2 days and airlines cancelled an average 20 percent of their scheduled flights at LAX. September, October and November passenger volumes were 67.11 percent, 71.17 percent and 75.26 percent, respectively, of the passenger volumes during the same months in 2000.

LAX processed 155,677 tons of air cargo (mail and freight) in December 2001, or 82.93 percent of the 187,729 tons in December 2000. September, October and November air cargo tonnage was 75.69 percent, 81.76 percent and 83.26 percent, respectively, of the air cargo volumes during the same months in 2000.
