Los Angeles -- Mayor Jim Hahn announced his selection of Kim Day as Interim Executive Director of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the city department that operates Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and three other airports. Day will succeed Lydia H. Kennard who announced earlier this week she is leaving LAWA to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

Since November 1999, Day has been a deputy executive director responsible for facility and space planning, design, engineering, and construction and maintenance at all four LAWA airports that also include Ontario International, Van Nuys and Palmdale Regional.

"I am pleased that Kim Day has agreed to serve as interim executive director after a suitable transition period with Lydia Kennard," Hahn said. "She is eminently qualified to maintain the momentum and management focus at our airports as we continue to pursue our plans to develop a truly regional approach to meeting aviation demand in Southern California."

Kennard said, "I am very pleased with Mayor's Hahn choice of Kim Day as the interim executive director for LAWA. Kim has had an exemplary career and is an outstanding leader. She is well respected by the many stakeholders associated with our airports. I will be working closely with Kim to ensure a seamless transition of leadership."

"Kim Day is an outstanding choice to manage LAWA and maintain continuity during its transitional period," said Board of Airport Commissioners President Ted Stein. "She brings the experience needed to ensure LAWA continues to move forward on its many projects to improve regional air transportation in Los Angeles."

Day is an architect with more than 25 years of experience in all phases of design and implementation, including substantial work on aviation projects. She began her professional career in 1977 with Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall (DMJM) of Los Angeles/San Francisco. As a DMJM vice president, Day oversaw a variety of airport and transportation projects, including serving as project director for the Ontario International Airport Terminal Project.

Day earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University in 1977 and has completed graduate course work for the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Mayor Hahn has asked the Board of Airport Commissioners to confirm the appointment at its next meeting.
