INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, SEAPORT POLICE EXECUTIVES TO MEET IN LOS ANGELES

(Los Angeles, California – May 13, 2003)  Protecting U.S. airports and seaports while preparing for future demand will be the focus of talks to be given at the 34th Annual Conference and Exposition of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police (IAASP) at the Los Angeles Airport Westin Hotel from May 26 through May 30.  The conference is co-hosted by Los Angeles World Airports and the Port of Los Angeles.

"Securing Global Gateways Through Public and Private Partnerships," this year's conference theme, reflects the continued need for information sharing between international governments and private industries.

"The conference will feature the latest updates on global terrorism, seaport and airport security issues, critical incident management and current challenges in a global transportation environment," said IAASP President Henk Van Unnik, who also is chief superintendent of River Police Rotterdam in The Netherlands. "We will analyze current international and national laws, procedures, regulations and technologies to develop strategies that allow for the efficient movement of goods and people through our airport and seaport transportation systems."

More than 200 airport and seaport police chiefs and security professionals from 50 countries are expected to attend the conference.  Guest speakers include California State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, U.S. Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow Stephen Flynn and Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley.  Representatives from the Transportation Security Administration, Interpol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the World Institute for Security Enhancement, U.S. Coast Guard, the World Shipping Council and the U.S. Customs & Border Patrol also are scheduled to speak.

A highlight of the conference is the IAASP's annual Memorial March to commemorate the men and women around the world who have lost their lives while protecting the traveling public and workers at airports and seaports.  This year's Memorial March will be held at the Flag Courtyard at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, May 29.

Sessions will cover port security and cargo movement, airport/seaport intelligence, suicide bombings, use and standards for explosive detection canines, airport security and passenger/baggage movement, global organized people smuggling and terrorism, security  technology integration, corporate airline safety and security, airport/seaport security and law enforcement, cruise ship safety and security, corporate maritime security, drug trafficking and interdiction, contraband detection and cargo theft interdiction.

More than 20 vendors will display the latest technology in airport and seaport security and law enforcement.
