BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS AWARDS CONTRACTS FOR 53 ALTERNATIVE-FUEL VEHICLES
(Los Angeles, California -- May 10, 2004) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today awarded contracts to Villa Ford, Fairway Ford, Reynolds Buick-GMC Trucks Inc. and Victor Buick-GMC Trucks Inc. for the purchase of 53 vehicles powered exclusively by clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) for use by various divisions at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA).
Alternative-fuel vehicles play a significant part in LAWA's commitment to a clean-air environment. These 53 new vehicles (34 light duty utility trucks, 14 pick-up trucks, and five vans) will bring LAWA’s total number of alternative-fuel vehicles to over 400, which represents 50 percent of the airport’s entire 800 vehicle fleet at Los Angeles International, Ontario International and Van Nuys Airports.
As part of LAWA’s ongoing fleet-maintenance program, the new vehicles will replace similar vehicles that have reached the end of their useful life expectancy. LAWA’s ultimate goal is to convert 100 percent of its vehicle fleet, excluding heavy-duty and construction equipment, to alternative fuels whenever practical and feasible.
