FAA PUBLISHES RECORD OF DECISION ON IMPROVEMENT PROPOSALS AT LAX

 

LOS ANGELES – The U. S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today approved an alternative for proposed improvements at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) that will enhance the airport and airfield’s safety and efficiency with less environmental impact than other proposed alternatives, including taking no action.

The LAX Master Plan is one of several critical national transportation projects selected by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta for expedited environmental review under an executive order of President Bush on environmental stewardship and transportation infrastructure project reviews. In its Record of Decision issued today, the FAA said that the major improvements in the Master Plan’s Alternative D will strengthen LAX as a commercial international gateway and improve safety at the airport. The improvements include:

  • Increasing the separation between each of the two pairs of parallel east-west runways to allow construction of parallel center taxiways, a change that will help reduce the potential for runway incursions and promote efficient movement of aircraft on the field;


  • Reconfiguring the central terminal complex to enhance safety and security and to accommodate the future mix of aircraft predicted for the airport;


  • Constructing a ground transportation center east of the airport to be the pick-up and drop-off point for passengers; and,


  • Constructing an intermodal transportation center to connect light rail and regional and local transit buses with the airport.

Alternative D, as approved in the Record of Decision, includes all proposed aviation- related facilities, but the Decision takes no action on “LAX Northside,” a non-aviation-related development of retail, housing and offices on the airport’s boundaries.
