STREET AND FREEWAY CLOSURES ANNOUNCED FOR FILM PRODUCTION NEAR LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
(Los Angeles, California – November 3, 2006) Airline passengers and airport workers are advised by the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) that there may be some delays getting to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) beginning this Saturday, Nov. 4 due to a major motion picture production near the airport. CalTrans and LADOT have jointly announced revised street and freeway closures for filming that will occur in three periods:
- Saturday, Nov. 4 through Sunday, Nov. 5
- Wednesday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 12
- Wednesday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Nov. 19
During all periods, Imperial Highway – one of the main access roads into and out of LAX -- is scheduled to be fully closed in the eastbound direction between Nash Street and Aviation Blvd. Westbound lanes in this section of Imperial Highway will be closed partially with only one lane remaining open. Westbound lanes will experience full closures (the remaining lane also closes) in two-minute intervals on an intermittent (rolling) basis. Closures will occur during the following periods:
- Weekdays (Nov. 8-10 and Nov. 15-17) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for eastbound lanes and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for westbound lanes
- Weekends (Nov. 4-5 and 11-12) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for both directions
On two early Sunday mornings, Nov. 5 and 12, this section of Imperial Highway will be fully closed in both directions for three hours from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.
In addition, during two weekends of Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 11-12, both east- and westbound Century Freeway I-105 between Sepulveda Blvd. and La Cienega Blvd., as well as the eastbound I-105 north- and southbound connectors to San Diego Freeway I-405, will experience intermittent (rolling) closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On two early Sunday mornings, Nov. 5 and 12, these freeway sections will be fully closed in both directions for three hours from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Motorists using westbound Imperial Highway during the intermittent or full closure periods can wait out the intermittent delay or detour at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Aviation Blvd. If headed toward the LAX passenger terminal area, motorists will be diverted one mile on northbound Aviation Blvd. to westbound Century Blvd. into the airport. If headed to the west side of LAX or county beaches, motorists will be diverted three miles on southbound Aviation Blvd. to westbound El Segundo Blvd. to northbound Sepulveda Blvd. to resume on westbound Imperial Highway.
Motorists using eastbound Imperial Highway during the fully closed periods will be diverted at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Nash Street. Nash Street will be made to run in two directions between Imperial Highway and Atwood Way in order to allow traffic to travel north to access Imperial Highway and to get to LAX from Douglas Street.
While Imperial Highway and Century Freeway I-105 near the airport will experience intermittent closures during filming, other major thoroughfares in and around LAX are expected to be fully open, including: San Diego Freeway I-405, Century Blvd., Sepulveda Blvd. and the Sepulveda Tunnel, Lincoln Blvd. and Westchester Parkway.
Because both east- and westbound Century Freeway I-105 will now experience intermittent, rather than earlier planned full closures of eastbound lanes during weekends, construction trucks related to LAX's South Airfield Improvement Project will continue following their current established route to and from the airport using I-105 and Imperial Highway.
Airport-wide and neighboring communities are advised that the film production studio reports it will use pyrotechnics (explosives) and simulated gunfire during filming, and a helicopter during weekends.
