LOS ANGELES AIRPORT POLICE TO REPRESENT STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AT THE NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER’S MEMORIAL

(Los Angeles, California – May 3, 2006) The Los Angeles Airport Police (LAX) will represent police agencies from the State of California at the annual National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Event in Washington, D.C. on May 12-15 as a tribute to all officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2005.

"This is a tremendous honor in memory of our fallen hero Officer Tommy E. Scott," said Brian A. Walker, acting Los Angeles Airport police chief. Scott was the first LAX officer killed in the line of duty in the 60-year history of the Airport Police.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. National Police Week is a collaborative effort, involving the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), and the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

The Los Angeles Airport Police Honor Guard is sending six of its members to the event. Officers Shawna Smith, Caj Scott, Brian Davis, Sofia Gallegos, Mark Corral and Sergeant George Holt. The Honor Guard will participate in several of the ceremonies that will be held throughout the week of May 15. This includes leading the Emerald Societies’ Pipeband March, the Candlelight Vigil Ceremony, the VIP Ceremony Escort Detail, the Survivors Vigil - guarding the Memorial Wall, the Memorial Day Services – Flag Bearers and the Wreath Laying Ceremony and many others.
