FINAL ADVISORY AT 1:15 PM PST, SUNDAY, JULY 19, 2009 – UPDATE ON WATER SERVICE OUTAGE AT LAX TERMINALS 2 AND 3
Update on water service at Terminals 3 at Los Angeles International Airport at 1:15 p.m. Sunday
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officials report water service has returned to normal at Terminal 3, the final terminal impacted by a major water main break last Thursday evening. Water quality tests conducted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power confirm the water in Terminal 3 meets drinking water standards. Full food and beverage service is expected to be available in the terminal later this afternoon.
Update on water service at LAX Terminals 2 and 3 at 4 p.m.:
Drinking water remains unavailable in Terminals 2 and 3. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power took water samples at Terminal 2 this afternoon. The test results are expected Saturday afternoon to determine if the water is potable and safe for human consumption. If the results declare the water safe, then normal water use in the terminal will be permitted. Until the results of the water quality tests from Terminal 2 determine the water is safe for human consumption, travelers should not drink the water or wash their hands from water sources in the building. Signs have been posted in the terminal advising passengers of the condition. Restroom toilets are working after the water line to the terminal was repaired this morning.
Work repairing the water line serving Terminal 3 continues. Airport staff is manually providing water to operate toilets in the terminal. Airport officials estimate non-potable water service could be operating mid-morning Saturday. Water quality samples of the water service at Terminal 3 could be taken later Saturday afternoon. If the results declare the water safe, then normal water use in the terminal could be permitted Sunday morning.
In the mean time, portable toilets for the public are in place on the upper and lower levels in front of Terminals 2 and 3.
Food vendors are selling pre-packaged food and bottle water in the terminals.
There are no flight delays due to this incident.
The next news advisory will be made Saturday as soon as updated information becomes available.
Update on water service at LAX Terminals 2 and 3: 12:55 p.m.
Water service has been restored to Los AngelesInternational Airport (LAX) Terminal 2 forrestroom toilets and hand washing. Airport officials stress that only NON-POTABLE water is in service at this time. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will sample the water quality later this afternoon to determine when the water is approved for human consumption. Test results will be known approximately 24 hours after they have been taken.
Repair work continues on the water main to restore water service to Terminal 3. Additional portable toilets are now available for passengers outside of Terminal 3.
Concessions in the Terminals 2 and 3 are open, with vendors selling prepackaged food items and bottled water.
Update on Water Service Outage at LAX Terminals 2 and 3: 10 a.m.
Work continues at Los AngelesInternationalAirport to restore water service to Terminals 2 and 3 after a break in the water line serving the terminals occurred Thursday afternoon. The break occurred in the ground floor of Parking Structure 2B, causing flooding on the first level. The flooding is now gone. The structure remains closed, but all other parking structures are open.
There are no flight delays due to the water incident.
Airport officials estimate NON-POTABLE water service will be restored to Terminal 2 at 11 a.m. and later this afternoon to Terminal 3. Officials emphasize to travelers that the water is not drinkable and cannot be used for hand washing. Airport staff is manually providing water to operate toilets in the terminals. Portable toilets are in place on the upper and lower levels outside of Terminals 2 and 3 for public use.
After the water service is restored, tests will be made by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to determine when the water is approved for human consumption. Test results will be known approximately 18 hours after they have been taken.
Food concessions in the Terminals 2 and 3 are open, with vendors selling pre-packaged food items and bottled water.
Update on the water main pipe break at LAX:
1. All flight operations and vehicular traffic are normal at LAX, which is usually very light at this time of early morning. The morning travel period is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. Friday morning. Flight operations and vehicular traffic are expected to be normal Friday morning, as well.
2. Plenty of parking is available, even though Parking Structure 2B will remain closed until further notice. Owners will be allowed to claim parked vehicles and exit the structure. Parking Structure 2A, adjacent to Structure 2B, is available to serve Terminal 2 passengers.
3. Water siphoning and pumping efforts were completed shortly after midnight and excavation of the water main break area has begun. Once finding the break to the 12-inch-diameter pipe, work crews then can assess the extent of damage and begin repairs. Repairs are expected to occur throughout Friday morning.
4. Terminals 2 and 3, and the USO facility remain without potable water. The restrooms in the terminal boarding gate areas remain open for passenger use and will continue to be serviced by airport custodial crews with alternative water source. Executive-style portable restrooms for men and women are located on both the Upper and Lower Levels and and remain on-site until the water supply is restored.
5. Center Way , the road that runs west to east through the middle of the Central Terminal Area (from the Tom Bradley International Terminal past theThemeBuilding and then flows into eastbound Century Boulevard) is now open. Remaining closed is the Lower/Arrivals Level of West Way, the road that runs north-south and located adjacent to affected Parking Structure 2B. The Upper/Departure Level of West Way remains opens.
6. Once the water supply is restored to Terminals 2 and 3, as well as to the USO facility, extensive water quality and safety tests will be conducted to ensure the water is safe for consumption.
7. Food and beverage concessionaires in Terminals 2 and 3 will continue to sell only pre-packaged, ready-to-go food and beverages until water service is restored and determined to be safe for drinking and cooking.

ADVISORY AT 10:00 PM PST, Thursday, July 16, 2009 – All Flight Operations and Vehicular Traffic Normal at LAX Following Water Main Pipe Break Affecting Terminals 2 and 3
Update on situation at LAX:
1. All flight operations and vehicular traffic remain normal at LAX.
2. The Bob Hope Hollywood USO facility located across from Terminal 2 in the middle of the Central Terminal Area is now reporting it is without water, but it remains open to serve military personnel and their families. A portable restroom has been installed in its parking lot. All other LAX facilities besides Terminals 2 and 3 and USO are operating normally.
3. Complementing LAX crews and equipment, LAFD has three fire engines and additional heavy-duty siphoning equipment pumping water from Parking Structure 2B into the street. The water reached from ankle-deep to about 3-1/2 feet in one especially affected section due to a slight slope on the ground and side walls that contained the water. After the water is lowered to a workable level, airport crews will excavate the area where the break is located and assess what may have caused the break and begin repairs. This work is expected to continue throughout tonight.
4. Inside Terminals 2 and 3, restrooms in the boarding gate areas have reopened for passenger use and are being serviced by airport custodial crews with water supplied from alternative source.
5. Outside Terminals 2 and 3, executive-type portable restrooms have been installed terminal curbside on both Upper and Lower Departure Levels in front of the two terminals. Additional portable restrooms have been installed on the aircraft ramp for airline, concessions and other airport-badged employees.
6. Food and beverage concessionaires remain open to sell pre-packaged, ready-to-go food and beverages.
7. A total of four vehicles in the parking structure in the affected area were towed to higher ground. All four owners have claimed their vehicles. As reported earlier, one vehicle was reported partially underwater.

ADVISORY AT 7:30 PM PST, Thursday, July 16, 2009 – All Flight Operations and Vehicular Traffic Normal at LAX Following Water Main Pipe Break Affecting Terminals 2 and 3
As Los AngelesInternationalAirport enters into its evening travel period, airport officials report that all flight operations and vehicular traffic are normal at the airport, even though water has been turned off to Terminals 2 and 3 following a break to a water main pipe that supplies water to those terminals. The break occurred shortly after 4 p.m. today (4:09 p.m.) and the water was turned off about 50 minutes later. Restrooms and food and beverage concessions will be closed in those two terminals until an interim, work-around water supply is implemented and the water pipe is repaired. Water to Terminal 4 also had been affected for three hours, but water is now being supplied to that terminal. Until interim water supply begins at Terminals 2 and 3, passengers will be able to purchase pre-packaged food and beverages from concessionaires in the affected terminals and to also use portable restrooms.
The water main break is located under the south side of Parking Structure 2B across from Terminal 2. One vehicle was reported partially underwater, while other vehicles in the area of the break were towed to higher ground. The parking structure is closed until further notice. Vehicles may exit the structure, but no vehicles are being allowed to enter. All other parking structures remain open, including Structure 2A , which is also located across from Terminal 2.
It is expected that airport crews will be working throughout tonight to repair the pipe break and to restore regular water supply to the terminals. All other facilities at LAX are operating normally.
