ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – ARTIST PAINTS GIANT ROBOTS IN NEW EXHIBIT AT LAX

(Los Angeles, California – June 16, 2010)  Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, announces My Toy Robots, an exhibition of over 20 paintings by artist Frank Minuto, depicting brightly colored robots inscribed with graffiti-style text on display at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Terminal 1, Gate 2 on the Departures Level, on view to ticketed passengers through August 30, 2010.

Inspired by a wonder of robots and space travel, Minuto paints vintage toy robots with bold outlines of color and scrawled text covering every inch of the painting’s surface.  “I feel that my paintings capture the fun and joy of my first childhood drawings, that wonderful merging of objects with words.  My work is driven by the pure joy of art,” states the San Pedro-based Minuto.

Minuto integrates his colorful paintings with the cacophony of daily life, pulling from graffiti writing and everyday objects, inspired by artists such as Jasper Johns, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Pablo Picasso and Claes Oldenburg.  Minuto’s art combines the 1950s and 1960s mass culture built around America’s space age with wry messages, blending popular imagery and the timeless art of inscription.

The purpose of the Airport Arts Exhibition Program at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT), is to educate and entertain the traveling public, while emphasizing a cultural experience highlighting what makes Los Angeles memorable and interesting. Exhibits may be historic, popular, artistic, or graphic design in nature and may arise from museums, fine art, archives, environment, or other fields. Exhibitions can be found on display in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, and Terminals 2 and 4 at LA/Ontario.
