ARTIST BENDS SPACE BETWEEN ART AND DESIGN IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL EXHIBIT AT LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
(Los Angeles, California – May 5, 2010) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, announces a new exhibition titled Twisted Under Sideways Down consisting of brightly colored vinyl flagging tape tied and fastened into a three-dimensional installation by Megan Geckler, on display at Los AngelesInternationalAirport (LAX) until July 26, 2010.
Located in the Terminal 3 in the baggage claim area for public view, Megan Geckler’s site-specific installation is constructed from multiple ribbons of flagging tape, a vivid plastic material used by surveyors to define and delineate space. Like drawings in space, horizontal bands of color intersect at intervals, creating layers of color and altering one’s perception of the space. “My installations become seemingly kinetic as the viewer’s orientation changes,” said Geckler. “This fascinates and delights viewers, as they frequently encourage each other to view the work from a certain direction to experience this phenomenon.”
Geckler’s art installation transforms into a continuous sculptural wave in blue and red curving through the confines of its glass-encased site. The installation is defined by the space and surface of the display case, and challenges the idea of what characterizes a sculpture.
The purpose of the Airport Arts Exhibition Program at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT), is to educate and entertain the traveling public, while emphasizing a cultural experience highlighting what makes Los Angeles memorable and interesting. Exhibits may be historic, popular, artistic, or graphic design in nature and may arise from museums, fine art, archives, environment, or other fields. Exhibitions can be found on display in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, and Terminals 2 and 4 at LA/Ontario.
