LOS ANGELES BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS APPROVE $40-MILLION FOR BAGGAGE SCREENING SYSTEM AT TERMINALS 7 AND 8 AT LAX

(Los Angeles, California – July 13, 2011)  Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners recently approved a $40-million Reimbursement Agreement with United Airlines, Inc., for design and construction costs associated with an inline Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) Project in Terminals 7 and 8 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The project will improve and automate security screening of checked baggage and will make traveling through Terminals 7 and 8 safer, faster and more convenient.

The agreement allows for transfer of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) funds through Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to United for approved costs associated with the design and construction of the system.  This action follows a 2003 Memorandum of Agreement, in which TSA committed to reimburse LAWA up to 75 percent of costs related to inline CBIS projects at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airport.

“This is a big step forward in the modernization of the airport because we are providing much needed upgrades to the level of service and convenience for our domestic travelers,” said LAWA Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey.
