LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL ALTERNATIVE-FUEL VEHICLES

(Los Angeles, California – January 23, 2012)  The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today approved the purchase of seven 12-passenger, alternative-fuel vans as part of Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA’s) ongoing Alternative-Fuel Vehicles Program.

The vans, fueled by liquefied propane gas (LPG), will be purchased from South Bay Ford Lincoln of Hawthorne at a cost of $314,549.57. 

The vehicles are being purchased for use by Airport Police Division at Los Angeles International Airport.  Through this action, LAWA will replace gasoline-powered passenger vans with more than 200,000 miles of use and at the end of their useful lives, with LPG-fueled vans.

Replacement of these vans will increase availability, reliability, operational safety and delivery of services while decreasing maintenance and ownership costs, officials said.

LAWA officials believe that alternative-fuel vehicles are important elements to meeting California’s future energy needs and are converting its inventory to alternative-fuel use as the gasoline-powered vehicles reach the end of their useful lives. There are presently more than 600 alternative-fuel vehicles, or more than 70 percent, in LAWA’s vehicle inventory.

LAWA is a City department that owns and operates three Southern California airports:  Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys.
