ART SPRINGS FROM RECYCLED AND RECLAIMED MATERIALS
(Ontario, California – June 28, 2012) In partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) is displaying a new solo exhibition featuring artwork by Aaron Kramer which weaves together the disciplines of art, craft, and design using found objects and repurposed materials. The exhibition, titled Design + Craft and the Reclaimed, is on display in Terminals 2 and 4 for the travelling public.
Kramer collects materials from a wide array of commercial and urban contexts and transforms them into abstract and figurative sculptures. Inspired by the texture and function of ordinary materials, some haveindustrial origins, such as street sweeper bristles, and some are castaways like coffee stirrers, tin can lids, corks, and driftwood. Kramer re-imagines the way that viewers interact with all sorts of day-to-day objects that are frequently discarded without a second thought, and uses processes of re-invention to create artworks that transcend the original materials.
Kramer’s innovation and creativity is marked by enthusiasm for the art of weaving using “green” or recycled or reclaimed materials, as well as materials found in nature. He often draws insight from his life-long fascination with birds, with their natural skill as nest weavers, and is inspired by the simplicity and functional versatility of the egg form. Kramer explains, “ No one taught me to weave, I just did. Following the natural rhythm of over-under-over-under is a genetic imperative. Weaving is in our collective DNA.”
The purpose of the Airport Arts Exhibition Program at ONT is to educate and entertaing the traveling public, while emphasizing a cultural experience. Exhibits may be historic, poopular, artistic, or graphic design in nature and may arise from museums, fine art, archives, environment, or other fields.
“ONT’s public art display program was initiated in 1998 when we built the twin terminal complex,” said Airport Manager Jess Romo. “It has been a popular program with our passengers and visitors.”
ONT is located in the Inland Empire, approximately 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the center of Southern California. It is a medium-hub, full-service airport with commercial jet service to 15 major U.S. cities and through service to many international destinations.
