LAX CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC ADVISORY – CENTER WAY
LAX MODERNIZATION UPDATE :
CENTRAL UTILITY PLANT CONSTRUCTION TO IMPACT MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS IN CENTRAL TERMINAL AREA OF LAX
(Los Angeles, California – January 21, 2014) Temporary lane restrictions on Center Way in the Central Terminal Area (CTA) of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will be in effect as part of a larger effort to permanently widen the eastbound-only roadway so vehicles can exit the CTA more easily in the future. Beginning at midnight, January 22, 2014, Phase 1 of the Center Way Widening Project will close one of the two lanes between East Way and Parking Structure 2A through April. The USO parking lot located between Parking Structures 1 and 2 also will be closed.
Phase 2 will impact Center Way between Parking Structure 2A and West Way, although specifics of those impacts are still in development. The Center Way widening effort is expected to be completed this summer.
The Center Way Widening Project is part of the airport’s Central Utility Plant (CUP) Project, which will replace the existing 50-year-old facility with a modern, state-of-the-art, energy efficient, and computer managed utility plant. The new CUP will enhance passenger comfort, and reliability of utility service and safety by providing additional capacity for air conditioning, heating and lighting of the airline passenger terminals (especially those terminals undergoing major renovation), the iconic LAX Theme Building, airport administration offices, and other airport buildings. The new CUP will use an innovative co-generation turbine that produces electricity and steam that, in turn, helps power a second set of generators to meet cooling and heating requirements in the terminals. The new CUP is designed to achieve a Gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Airport officials are seeking the public’s help to reduce traffic congestion in and around LAX by encouraging passengers and motorists to:
· Take public transportation to/from LAX, including the inexpensive and convenient LAX FlyAway® nonstop bus service at Union Station, Van Nuys, Expo/LaBrea and Westwood; and the Metro Rail Green Line.
· If picking up arriving passengers, park vehicles and wait inside the terminal or use the free LAX Cell Phone Waiting Lotat the intersection of 96thStreet and Vicksburg Avenue, adjacent to the entrance of LAX Economy Parking Lot C.
