LAX MODERNIZATION UPDATE: NOVEMBER CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES EXPECTED TO CAUSE PASSENGER IMPACTS
(Los Angeles, California – November 2, 2015) Major construction projects at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will continue to impact travelers in November with sidewalk and vehicle lane closures and in-terminal work. This construction, part of a multi-billion-dollar capital-improvement program underway throughout LAX, will result in a modern airport that significantly improves the overall guest experience.
The following roadway lane activities are in effect on a nightly or continuous (24 hours a day, seven days a week) basis in the airport CTA:
· Rotating lane closures on the Lower/Arrivals Level roadway remain in effect nightly throughout the CTA.
· Traffic signal work on the Lower/Arrivals Level of the CTAinvolving curbside and nightly inner-lane restrictions continues, as well as closures of some sidewalks and crosswalks. Work will be completed this year.
· Repair and resurfacing of the Upper/Departures Level roadway is underway nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., with the goal of completing all work (including removing current concrete, installing overlay paving, and lane re-striping) by mid-November. Passengers will still have access to terminals. However, upper level lanes will be restricted periodically and motorists may experience delays entering and exiting the airport, as well as when dropping off passengers.
· A300-foot-long barricade is installed on the Upper/Departures Level curb along the western half of Terminal 1. As a result, commercial transportation vehicles are required to drop off passengers along the curb after the barricade. Because Terminal 1 is located at the entrance to the airport, there may be some traffic backups on the roads leading into the CTA, and delays getting to all terminals. This curb lane closure is expected to continue through February 2016.
· A barricade installed for elevator and stairwell repairs on the north side of Parking Structure 3 has closed the adjacent vehicle Lane 1 for 24 hours a day. Lane 2 is also closed on a nightly basis. The barricade will remain in place until the project is completed March 2016.
· Elevator and stairwell upgrades also are being performed at the southwest corner of Parking Structure 4 and will continue through April 2016. Lane 1 adjacent to Parking Structure 4 is closed 24 hours a day and Lane 2 is closed on a nightly basis.
· Renovations to the Elevator 1 and 2 towers in Parking Structure 6 are underway and Lane 1 adjacent to the structure is closed.
· Trenching work on the Lower/Arrivals Level continues for the Terminal 4 Connector building located between the Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 4. Pedestrians will continue to be rerouted into the curbside lane.
Renovations Inside Terminals are also underway:
· Terminal 1: Barricades remain in place on the west side of all levels of Terminal 1 while office spaces and passenger waiting areas are renovated as part of Southwest Airlines’ $508-million Terminal 1 Renovation Project. Concessions in the center of the terminal remain closed but the food court past the passenger security screening area remains open, as well as a few grab-and-go stands throughout the terminal.
· Terminal 2: As part of LAWA’s nearly $300-million renovation of Terminal 2, a totally new concessions program on both levels is scheduled to be completed later this year. The facility already features a first-ever airport location for local favorites such as Ciabatta Bar featuring organic Italian food; Sealegs, a wine bar; and Slapfish, which features seafood. All Terminal 2 construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
· Terminal 6: Disruptions to passenger flow may be experienced throughout the terminal due to installation of new concessions, which is expected to continue through 2016. Local favorites, The Habit burgers and Wahoo Fish Tacos, are now open, along with Starbucks Evenings. Upscale luggage and travel accessories retailer TUMI, and cosmetics retailer MAC, are also open.
· Terminals 7/8: Structural steel work is taking place behind barricades as part of the Terminal 7 Renovation Project which is expected to be finished in December 2017. The waiting area at Gate 71A is also undergoing construction, closing that space for the next several months. The United Airlines Baggage Service Office, Baggage Carousel 4, and the Lower/Arrivals Level access for Terminal 8 are closed while a new carousel and an updated baggage service office are being built.
Sidewalk/Walkway Restrictions and Closures are also in effect at the following locations:
· As part of the Terminal 1 Renovation Project, portions of the sidewalk on the Upper/Departures and Lower/Arrivals levels will be closed through 2016, with pedestrians routed around barricaded areas.
· The pedestrian bridge connecting Terminal 3 with Parking Structure 3 is closed.
· A bump-out sidewalk exists on the Upper/Departures Level at Terminal 7 for work to widen the sidewalk.
· A 150-foot-long barricade exists on the easternmost sidewalk of the Terminals 7/8 Upper/Departures Level, effectively closing that sidewalk.
· Work on the north side elevators in Parking Structure 3 has temporarily closed Lane 1 and a portion of the sidewalk. Signs are posted to re-route passengers to other elevators in the parking structure.
· A bump-out sidewalk exists on the Upper/Departures Level between the Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 4 for work to extend the canopy from TBIT to Terminal 4 as part of the LAX Curbside Appeal Project.
