LOW-COST, NONSTOP FLYAWAY® BUS SERVICE BETWEEN LAX AND LONG BEACH TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER

 (Los Angeles, California – October 1, 2015)  New, low-cost FlyAway® bus service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Long Beach Transit Gallery is scheduled to begin December, following approval today by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners of a memorandum of understanding with the Long Beach Public Transportation Company.  The Board also approved a separate item setting a $7 introductory one-way fare per passenger upon start of service for at least six months.

The agreement, which is for one year with two one-year renewal options, allows the airport to provide scheduled, nonstop passenger pickup and drop-off bus service between LAX and the Long Beach Transit Gallery.  The FlyAway® bus stop will be located at the northwest corner of 1st Street and Long Beach Boulevard.    

Airport officials recommended downtown Long Beach for FlyAway® bus service because results of a passenger survey showed this zip-code area generated the fifth largest percentage of originating passengers using LAX. 

The Long Beach Transit Gallery was selected because it provides connectivity with other bus service providers such as Metro, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Torrance Transit, and Long Beach Transit, as well as the Metro Blue Line Light Rail service.  The Long Beach Transit Gallery is located a short walking distance to public parking, high-density residential properties, the Long Beach Convention Center, and hotels.

Airport staff projects ridership to reach up to 50,000 passengers during the first full year of operation, which is comparable to the first year of FlyAway® bus service in Hollywood.

Establishing FlyAway ® bus service in Long Beach will complete the terms of the LAX Master Plan Settlement Agreement, which requires Los Angeles World Airports to implement a total of eight new FlyAway ® sites by 2015.
