TRAFFIC ADVISORY NEAR LAX UPDATE: DATE CHANGE FOR NIGHTLY CLOSURES OF CENTURY BOULEVARD NEAR LAX FOR ON-GOING CONSTRUCTION OF METRO AVIATION/CENTURY STATION

(Los Angeles, California – July 9, 2015)  The planned nightly closure of westbound Century Boulevard between Aviation Boulevard and Bellanca Avenue has been changed and will now begin on July 13, 2015 not July 7, 2015 as previously announced.

Officials at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) are reminding motorists that beginning on July 13, nightly road closures of Century Boulevard are expected to impact traffic.  Motorists are advised to allow extra time for expected delays due to detours and nightly peak traffic volumes LAX is experiencing during the busy summer travel season.

According to Metro (Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority), hours of closure will be from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Century Boulevard is a major access road to/from LAX, handling approximately half of all traffic into and out of the airport.  One direction of Century Boulevard will be closed at a time, with westbound Century leading to LAX to close first, followed by the eastbound closure the next week.   The schedule is subject to weather conditions.

According to Metro, the closure of alternating directions of Century Boulevard is required so that framing installation for a new bridge can take place without danger to vehicles passing beneath.  This work is part of Metro’s aerial Aviation/Century Station on the Crenshaw/LAX Line.   -

It is estimated nearly 93,000 motorists travel through the intersection of Century and Aviation boulevards on a daily basis.  Airport travelers and workers, employees of local businesses, and hotel guests are being advised that they should plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use recommended detours.  Detour information is posted with other project information at www.metro.net/crenshaw.

Detours:

·                     If traveling west on Century, turn right (north) at Aviation Boulevard, left (west) at Arbor Vitae Street, left (south) at Airport Boulevard, and right (west) at Century Boulevard.

·                     If traveling east on Century, turn left (north) on Airport Boulevard, right (east) at Arbor Vitae Street, right (south) at Aviation Boulevard, and left (east) on Century.

Access to emergency responders will be maintained at all times.  Pedestrians will be rerouted to a safe area outside the construction zone.

Metro Bus service in construction areas may be detoured, but Metro will post bus route information on the regular bus stops.  For Metro bus service updates, call (323) GO-METRO from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The 8.5-mile Metro Crenshaw/LAX Line is a $2.058-billion, light-rail line that will connect the Green Line and the Expo Line.  It will have eight new stations to serve the Crenshaw, Inglewood and LAX communities.  It is expected to open 2019.
