Jeffery Plansker is a Detroit native who has been based in Los Angeles for over thirty years, the last seven of which as host of the monthly radio show titled Jazz Advance at dublab. Starting from the crosshairs of 1960’s hard bop, Jazz Advance moves through time and location covering everything from contemporary Northern European Avant-Garde to Brazilian Bossa Nova, Rare Groove to Cake Walks of the early 1900’s. The program draws from personal record collecting to in-studio performances of local and international players. Each show finds a unique look at the ever-evolving and influential medium of Jazz.
Plansker’s love of jazz goes all the way back to a childhood around the Detroit music scene and his parents’ influence. In high school he played bass in the band Jebozz (Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival - 1980/81) before heading into the visual side of the industry with film and photography.
As a music video and commercials director, Plansker’s credits range from Radiohead, Soundgarden, Urge Overkill and Robbie Robertson, to Superbowl ads for Fiat, Cadillac, and Mercedes Benz.
He is editor of the Substack newsletter Brilliant Corners, founder of the record label Geodesic Disques, producer of the creative survey Beneath Detroit, creator of the retail concept store The Bloke, and Director / Visual Artist at Pocket Studio.
