LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS HONORS GATEWAYS INTERNSHIP PARTICIPANTS
(Los Angeles, CA - June 19, 2000) The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) recently announced its class of 2000-2001 GATEWAYS Internship program, which is designed to match high school seniors with various Los Angeles International (LAX) employers for a one-year internship.
This year’s class of 69 interns come from Inglewood and Morningside High Schools of Inglewood Unified School District; Leuzinger and Hawthorne High Schools of the Centinela Valley Union High School District; and Westchester High School of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The GATEWAYS Internship Program, a partnership between LAWA, local school districts, the South Bay Private Industry Council, and airport employers exposes students to the airline and transportation industry through classroom training and work experience.
"The GATEWAYS program began in 1998 as a pilot program and we are extremely pleased that we have been able to expand the program this year," said Lydia Kennard, LAWA’s executive director. "The goal of GATEWAYS is to make students aware of the numerous career opportunities available in the aviation industry, from interning at an airline to interning at the city attorney’s office. We want to create a world of opportunities for tomorrow’s leaders."
The program’s objective is to provide employers with qualified and motivated workers who can eventually develop into future airport employees. More than 50 students have participated in the program since its inception, with several placed in permanent positions.
