CONTRACT AWARDED FOR RESIDENTIAL SOUNDPROOFING NEAR LAX

(Los Angeles, CA –January 18, 2000) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today awarded a not-to-exceed $1,195,000 contract to P.B.C. of El Segundo, CA, for residential soundproofing work near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The contract covers sound insulation modifications on 58 units in 40 buildings located in the Los Angeles communities of Westchester and Playa del Rey.

Following the action, Los Angeles Sixth District Councilmember Ruth Galanter, in whose district the airport is located, commented, "The soundproofing program provides noise relief to the neighbors and allows them to enjoy the benefits of a quieter home environment."

This contract award brings the total number of homes completed or in the process of soundproofing construction to 1,040. The residences are outfitted with dual-paned windows, solid-core doors, attic insulation, and other necessary soundproofing improvements.

Los Angeles World Airports Interim Executive Director Lydia H. Kennard said, "The neighborhood acceptance of the soundproofing program has been very gratfiying. The partnership between the homeowners and Los Angeles World Airports has allowed this program to move forward very successfully."

The noise mitigation program includes nearly 9,000 residences in the Los Angeles communities of Westchester, Playa del Rey and South Los Angeles with a recorded community Noise Equivalency Level (CNEL) of 65 decibels or higher.

The LAX Residential Soundproofing Bureau administers the program. A community office at 8939 South Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A soundproofed model home at 419 Waterview Street in Playa del Rey is open to visitors by appointment. Residents may call (310) 646-7444 for information.
