LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT REPORTS OCTOBER STATISTICS
(Los Angeles, California -- November 21, 2001) Los Angeles International Airport officials today released October passenger and air cargo statistics showing declines of 28.83 percent in passengers and 18.24 percent in air cargo tonnage compared to October 2000.
Airport officials said that passenger traffic in October was lower than October last year, but not down as deeply as in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The drop in international passengers of 34.33 percent contributed to the decline in domestic traffic because approximately one-third of LAX's international passengers connects to or from domestic flights. Taking that into account, total LAX traffic in October was consistent with airline industry data for October, as reported by the Air Transport Association, an airline industry trade association.
Airlines serving LAX reported a 28.83 percent decline in passengers from 5,528,111 in October 2000 to 3,934,549 last month. From January through October this year compared to the same period last year, the decline was 5.85 percent from 56,509,681 to 53,202,847.
Domestic passenger total declined 26.91 percent from 4,099,097 in October 2000 to 2,995,921 last month. International passenger total declined 34.32 percent from 1,429,014 in October 2000 to 938,628 last month.
Air cargo (mail and freight) at LAX was down 18.24 percent from 205,045 tons in October 2000 to 167,643 tons last month. Much of this decline was attributed to a 55.90 percent decline in mail from 20,478 tons in October 2000 to 9,031 tons last month. This shows mail continues to be heavily transported by truck rather than by air since September 11.
Airfreight was down 14.06 percent from 184,567 tons in October 2000 to 158,612 tons last month.
Air cargo (mail and freight) from January through October this year declined 12.36 percent to 1,636,598 tons from 1,867,356 tons during the same period last year. Total air cargo at LAX was already down 10.05 percent to 1,329,115 tons during January through August this year from 1,477,550 during the same period last year, due to the general decline in the overall economy before the September 11 events.
Commercial aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs) at LAX decreased 19.24 percent from 66,698 in October 2000 to 53,862 last month. Commercial aircraft operations for January through October this year totaled 621,202, a decline of 2.05 percent from 634,253 during the same period last year.
