FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION TO JOIN OVER 60 LOS ANGELES-AREA JOB RECRUITERS AT LAX JOB FAIR

(Los Angeles, California -- November 7, 2001) Recruiters from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will join Los Angeles County employers at the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Small Business & Job Opportunities Center's "We Care Job Fair" for displaced aviation-industry employees. Information on more than 2,300 job openings, including new FAA positions will be available. The job fair is scheduled for Thursday, November 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Proud Bird Restaurant at 11022 Aviation Boulevard in Los Angeles, adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

According to the FAA, employees will be hired for temporary positions not to exceed six months to provide oversight and support at passenger screening checkpoints, to assist screeners and supervisors as necessary, to help certify screening equipment, and to ensure that security is being performed correctly. The proposed hiring of these temporary FAA workers, who would work under the direct supervision of FAA civil aviation security agents, was announced only two days ago by U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

Other positions from entry-level to senior management in a wide range of fields including computer and technical, retail, police/fire/security, and customer service will be offered by employers such as Bank of America, Disney, Mellon Financial, Creative Computers, Rite Aid, McDonalds, and local police departments.

"This is another in a series of events designed to assist displaced workers in the aviation industry," said Joyce Sloss, director of LAWA's Small Business & Job Opportunities Center. "We greatly appreciate the participation of the many employers who view this opportunity as a means to find highly qualified candidates for their positions."

Job seekers will be provided a list of available jobs and a schedule of training classes on resume writing and job interviewing skills to be offered during the job fair. The list also will contain job openings at companies that will not have a representative at the event.

Participants should bring their resume and be prepared to be interviewed. Workshops also will be offered to assist applicants with resume writing and improving their interviewing skills.

The job fair is being conducted under the auspices of the LAWA Business and Employee Service Team (BEST), which was created to help mitigate the economic impacts on airport-wide employees who have lost their jobs as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11.

Members of LAWA’s BEST include the LAWA Small Business & Job Opportunities Division, the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County and South Bay Workforce Investment Boards; the Carson, Lomita, Torrance Workforce Investment Network; the State of California Employment Development Department; the Los Angeles Unified School District Division of Adult & Career Education; Marina del Rey Career Planning Center; and United Airlines.
