BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS DELEGATES RE-OPENING OF LAX CENTRAL TERMINAL AREA ROADWAYS, PARKING STRUCTURES TO AIRPORTS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

(Los Angeles, California -- October 9, 2001) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners voted today to invoke the Federal Aviation Administration waiver that allows parking within 300 feet of the passenger terminals at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The Board also delegated the decision to re-open the Central Terminal Area roadways and parking structures under a modified traffic plan to Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Lydia H. Kennard. No decision has been made on when the Central Terminal Area re-opening will occur.

The proposed plan includes no curbside drop-offs or pick-ups of passengers by private vehicles. All private vehicles entering the Central Terminal Area would be required to park in the parking structures. Also, all vehicles entering the terminal area would be subject to random search.

LAWA Executive Director Kennard would decide when the passenger terminal area would be re-opened after private consultation with law enforcement officials, including the LAX Airport Police, Los Angeles Police Department, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the office of Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn.

The Central Terminal Area has been closed to private vehicles since LAX resumed operations September 13 following the terrorist attacks that closed the nation's airports.
