GREEN RIDE DAY IS WIN-WIN FOR TRAVELERS AND ENVIRONMENT
LAX Highlights Ridesharing Options at Kick-Off of Busy Summer Travel Season

LOS ANGELES – May 23, 2001 – While nearly 800,000 travelers will pass through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) over Memorial Day weekend, some will get there and back the "green" way – sharing the ride, and protecting the environment. LAX will celebrate with Green Ride Day on Friday, May 25, by rewarding the first 2,001 of these conscientious travelers to arrive at the airport with coupons for a free Krispy Kreme doughnut and coffee – and a chance to win the prize of a summer party for 20 friends at the Encounter Restaurant in the LAX landmark Theme Building.

Among the "green" ride options for travelers going to and from LAX:

    • Door-to-door shuttle vans for a ride in a clean-burning, alternative-fuel vehicle;
    • Metro Rail Green Line to the Aviation Boulevard Station, then a free LAX shuttle straight to the terminal; shuttle buses will operate at 15- to 20-minute intervals during the holiday weekend, from 4:30 a.m. Friday to 12:15 a.m. Saturday.
    • Express FlyAway Bus from Van Nuys Airport, on Woodley Avenue at Saticoy Street.

"Travelers who take advantage of the green ride alternatives help the environment by reducing vehicle congestion and harmful emissions," said Roger Johnson, deputy executive director of Environmental Affairs for Los Angeles World Airports, which owns and operates LAX. They also save themselves the hassle and expense of driving to the airport and searching for parking."

LAX’s Green Team representatives and Krispy Kreme will welcome travelers with doughnuts at the Metro Rail Green Line Aviation Station from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on May 25.

Michael DiGirolamo, deputy executive director for Airports Operations suggests that passengers allow extra time to get to – and around – the airport. Additional tips to help travelers reduce stress and start off their holiday weekends and summer vacations include:

    • Call the airline before leaving home to confirm the flight’s terminal location. In some cases, airlines operate from more than one terminal.
    • Plan to arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight, and three hours before an international flight to allow for possible delays.
    • Do not make any jokes about security issues. Remarks about bombs or violent action are taken seriously, and in some cases, lead to arrests.
    • Log onto the LAX Web site, www.lawa.org, for additional ground transportation information.
    • For those who must drive, remote parking is available in lots B and C, then take a free LAX shuttle to terminals: Lot B at 111th Street and La Cienega Boulevard, and Lot C at 96th Street and Sepulveda Boulevard.
    • After parking a vehicle, do not leave belongings in view. Store them in the trunk.
    • Call 310-646-5252 for automated airport information assistance on parking, ground transportation, and services for the physically challenged.
    • Be prepared to show photo identification to receive tickets and boarding passes.
    • Put identification inside and outside all luggage; the name must match the name on the airline ticket.
    • Expect questioning about luggage and hand-searches of carry-on items at the passenger screening areas.
    • Travelers to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. destinations requiring over-water flights must check-in luggage at the ticket counter.
    • Carry valuables such as cash, medicine and jewelry on the plane.
    • Keep an eye on luggage at all times; do not leave it unattended.
    • Be alert to possible pickpocket tactics, such as being jostled or bumped.
    • When making phone calls, shield credit card and phone pad from the view of observers.

Los Angeles World Airports is a self-supporting department of the City of Los Angeles, which owns and operates a world-class system of four airports: Los Angeles International, Ontario International, Palmdale Regional, and Van Nuys. LAWA’s combined airports move 74 million passengers and 2.7 tons of cargo annually; employ, directly and indirectly, more than 410,000 people, and pump nearly $70 billion into the Southern California economy. Additional information about LAWA is available at www.lawa.org.
