LAX TO HOLD TWO SEPTEMBER 11 REMEMBRANCE EVENTS FOR PUBLIC

(Los Angeles, California - August 29, 2002) Officials at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) today announced plans to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001, with two public events: a candlelight vigil and plaque dedication on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and a "Circle of Unity" ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

"Our airport was tragically linked to the terrorist attacks on our nation, as three of the four hijacked flights were bound for LAX. In keeping with the 'LA Remembers' theme announced by Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is inviting the public to attend its two special ceremonies to remember and reflect about these events one year later," said Lydia H. Kennard, LAWA executive director.

LAWA officials, along with other city, federal and community representatives, will conduct the public candlelight vigil and plaque dedication on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. at the LAX flagpole courtyard located at the entrance of LAX (intersection of Century and Sepulveda Boulevards).

The names of the victims lost on the four California-bound flights will be read aloud and a plaque inscribed with their names entitled, "In Memory of September 11, 2001," will be unveiled at the base of the flagpole. Following the brief ceremony, the Gateway LAX Pylons will be illuminated for 27 hours until midnight Sept. 11 in a special red, white, and blue design sequence created for this anniversary by lighting artist Paul Tzanetopoulos.

Candles will be provided for the vigil, and two hours free parking will be available at nearby LAX Parking Lot C at 96th Street and Sepulveda Boulevard.

Beginning at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11, LAX will hold a moment of silence at the historic Theme Building in the center of LAX's Central Terminal Area. The public, airport employees and passengers will be invited to form a silent human "Circle of Unity" around the Theme Building like the one held last Sept. 14, the first full day of flight activity after Sept. 11. This moment of silence will coincide with other moments of silence occurring throughout Los Angeles.

The public is invited to the event and parking is available in all of the airport's parking structures and open-air lots, with two hours free parking in Parking Lots B and C.
