HISTORICAL FLY-IN TO MARK 100th ANNIVERSARY OF WRIGHT BROTHERS ’ FIRST FLIGHT; FESTIVAL RECOGNIZES CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY

 

WHAT:

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) will mark 100 years of aviation progress since the Wright Brothers' first controlled, powered flight on Dec. 17, 1903, and Los Angeles International Airport's (LAX's) 75th anniversary with the following commemorative events:

  1. A fly-in and static display of historical aircraft representing five generations of commercial passenger aircraft (the latest vintage aircraft last flew commercial operations at LAX over 30 years ago)
  2. Sealing of a time capsule containing aviation-related items
  3. Festival in the LAX Central Terminal Area featuring live entertainment, aviation exhibits, give-aways, children's play area with pedal-planes, and law enforcement K-9 demonstrations
WHEN: Wednesday, December 17, 2003

WHEN & WHERE:
  1. Historical aircraft fly-in and static display (media and invited guests only): Flight Path Learning Center aviation history museum housed in the LAX Imperial Terminal, 6661 West Imperial Highway, Los Angeles (Thomas Guide: 702/G-6)
    • 8 am:
    		 Historical aircraft fly-in (for operational reasons, one or more aircraft may arrive Tuesday afternoon)
    • 9 am:
    		 Commemoration and time capsule sealing
  2. Centennial of Flight Festival: Metered Parking Lot 6 in the LAX Central Terminal Area across from Terminal 6. Festival hours from 10 am to 4 pm.
WHO: Over 200 invited guests representing Los Angeles City; airlines and other LAX tenants; civic, business and community organizations; and aviation historical organizations are expected to attend the vintage aircraft fly-in and time-capsule sealing. Several hundred members of the traveling public, visitors and airport-wide employees are expected to attend the festival in the Central Terminal Area.

VISUALS:
  • Arrivals of vintage aircraft that last flew commercial passenger service at LAX 25 to 30 years ago
  • Insertion of last 2-3 items into time capsule and sealing
  • Vintage aircraft on static display
  • Live entertainment provided by local schools, professional and amateur musicians
  • Toddlers in pedal planes painted by three airlines
  • Exhibits featuring aviation pioneers Tuskegee Airmen, Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control operations, Centennial of Flight exhibit and specially commissioned videos, photo exhibit of celebrities who have passed through LAX
    • MEDIA PARKING:
    1. At LAX Imperial Terminal, all media vehicles may park in designated area in front of the terminal.
    2. In Central Terminal Area, broadcast-equipped media vehicles ONLY may park along the southside curb in the traffic lane adjacent to the Theme Building. Vehicles may be left unattended. All other media vehicles may park in any parking structure (parking will be validated at the LAWA Booth).
