ASIAN FREIGHT AWARDS PICK LAX AS TOP AIR CARGO AIRPORT
(Los Angeles, California – May 6, 2003) Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the favorite North American air cargo airport of Asian-based importers and exporters who use air freight services, according to Cargonews Asia, sponsors of the 2003 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards.
"We are very pleased that the readers of the leading air cargo publication in the Asia-Pacific region recognize LAX as the airport providing the best service to shippers in North America," said Lydia H. Kennard, executive director of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the city department that owns and operates three other airports in addition to LAX.
This is the ninth time in 10 years that the 13,000 readers of Cargonews Asia have named LAX as one of the top airports in the world in terms of service to its customers. The publication’s readers nominate the best service providers in 34 industry categories related to international trade. The awards are now in their 17th year, and LAX first won recognition as North America’s top air cargo in 1994. LAX received 26 percent of the votes cast by readers, while the category’s other finalists -- New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport received 23 percent and 21 percent, respectively.
Airports are nominated based on their provision of suitable cargo-related infrastructure; cost-competitive, cargo-friendly fee schedule; timely and adequate investment in infrastructure to meet future demand; and the fostering of air cargo support services such as logistics and freight forwarding facilities either on- or off-airport.
LAX handled nearly two million tons of air cargo in 2001 and 2002. It ranks as the fifth busiest air cargo airport in the world, with more than 50 percent of its tonnage destined to or arriving from airports outside the U.S.
