STATEMENT FROM MAYOR JIM HAHN REGARDING CITY COUNCIL VOTE ON LAX PLAN
Today’s City Council vote to override the county’s objections to the Consensus Plan is an important step for LAX and the City of Los Angeles.
This milestone vote shows the City’s commitment to creating a safer, more secure airport. My primary interest in improving the airport is to increase the security of LAX’s employees, travelers and infrastructure. This plan will enhance the safety of the millions of passengers who move through the airport every year.
Today’s vote also means that we are a step closer to boosting our local economy. Moving forward with the passage of this plan also means that LAX will contribute $64 billion annually to the regional economy by 2015. Implementation of the Consensus Plan will result in an additional $3.7 billion in economic activity in Los Angeles County.
I am pleased to see that the City Council has joined with Councilmember Cindy Miscikowski and myself in moving forward with the Consensus Plan.
Today’s vote was a product of consensus building, hard work, dedication and thoughtful debate. I look forward to continuing the momentum towards a safer and more secure LAX.
