FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT RELEASED
FOR LOS ANGELES AIRPORT SOUTH AIRFIELD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
(Los Angeles, California – October 27, 2005) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) today released the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for the South Airfield Improvement Project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). All documents, including appendices, will be available for review at www.laxmasterplan.org, and at designated public libraries and other locations.
As required by the California Environmental Quality Act, the Final EIR contains LAWA’s written responses to the nearly 600 comments from individuals and organizations on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) received during a 45-day public comment period that ended Sept. 15, 2005.
During the public comment period, LAWA conducted a public workshop and an all-day stakeholders forum so that the public could learn more about the project, as well as work together to develop comments on the Draft EIR.
The Final EIR will next undergo further actions required under the LAX Specific Plan Process and is tentatively scheduled for consideration by the Board of Airport Commissioners in December 2005.
The proposed project consists of the relocation of Runway 7R/25L to approximately 55 feet to the south of its current centerline location and the construction of a new center parallel taxiway between the two south runways. These improvements were identified as part of the LAX Master Plan and were generally analyzed in the LAX Master Plan EIR, certified by the Los Angeles City Council in December 2004. The purpose of these improvements is to enhance the safety of LAX operations by reducing the potential for runway incursions.
