LA/PALMDALE REGIONAL AIRPORT HOSTS CAREER PATH SEMINAR FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

(Palmdale, California -- September 21, 2007)  LA/Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD) will join over 100 other community organizations in hosting the 14th annual Salute to Youth event.  Over 2,500 high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to visit with Antelope Valley/High Desert employers and discuss career opportunities.

“This event can help students who are undecided about a career to pursue by giving them an opportunity to see a sampling of jobs available to high school graduates,” said Bob Gluck, PMD airport manager.  “Many of the careers represented don’t require a college degree at the entry-level.”

Salute to Youth offers information about career paths for the students to explore.  Participants include leaders from business, industry, military and post-secondary institutions throughout the AntelopeValley.

Local business, industry, government and community volunteers provide career exhibits and/or demonstrations within the following career pathways: aerospace/aviation, arts/media/communications, agriculture, environment and natural resources, business, consumer family science (hospitality/tourism/education), health care, industrial technology, information technology, and law/government/public services.

Hands-on exhibits and displays provide information about entry, technical, and professional level career opportunities, career-technical schools, colleges, and the military.  Aircraft static displays include the B-2, F-118, F18, F16, and Global Hawk to inspire students into aerospace careers.

Sponsors include, in alphabetical order, Boeing, City of Lancaster, City ofPalmdale, Edwards Air Force Base, Lockheed, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA),Northrop, United States Air Force Plant 42 and many others.  The opening ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m. at Site 9 (30th Street East and Avenue P).

PMD is located on a 60-acre site at U.S. Air Force Plant 42.  It is approximately 60 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles off State Highway 14. LAWA owns 17,750 acres of land adjacent to Plant 42, most of which is available for development.  PMD is one of four airports owned and operated by LAWA, a city ofLos Angeles department that also owns and operates Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys airports.
