LAX GATEWAY PYLONS TO BE LIT RED, WHITE AND BLUE IN COMMEMORATION OF 9/11

WHAT:          The Los AngelesInternationalAirport (LAX)  Gateway Pylons on Century

                     Boulevard will be lit in red, white and blue tonight in commemoration of

                      the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy.

WHY :             Los AngelesInternationalAirport was tragically linked to the September

                      11 terrorist attacks on our nation, as three of the four hijacked flights

                      were bound for LAX.

WHEN:           The pylons will be lit in these colors beginning at midnight, 12:01 a.m.,

                       tonight, September 11, and remain lit until 12:01 a.m., Friday,

                       September 12.

BACKGROUND:

                        The LAX Gateway landmark series of 26 colorfully lighted pylons at the

                         entrance to the airport have become a symbolic gateway to Los

                         Angeles since they were first lit in August 2000.  The 2,000 LED (light

                         emitting diodes) fixtures in the pylons are illuminated nightly in a in a

                         variety of colors and sequences. 

HOW LAX WAS AFFECTED:

§         Number of people who died when American Airlines Flight 11 bound from Boston to Los Angeles crashed into the north tower of the WorldTradeCenter: 92.

§         Number of people who died when United Airlines Flight 175 bound from Boston to Los Angeles crashed into the south tower of the WorldTradeCenter: 65

§         Number of people who died when American Airlines Flight 77, from Washington, D. C. to Los Angeles, crashed into the Pentagon: 64.
