NOTICE OF PREPARATION OF DRAFT EIR FOR LAX’S TOM BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC REVIEW; SCOPING MEETING SCHEDULED

(Los Angeles, California – December 18, 2008) – Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has released for public review and comment a Notice of Preparation (NOP) of a Draft Environmental Impact Report for Los AngelesInternationalAirport’s (LAX) Tom Bradley International Terminal’s (TBIT) Reconfiguration Project.  A public scoping meeting has been scheduled by LAWA for Jan. 14, 2009 to discuss the NOP.

The meeting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the FlightPathLearningCenter – Imperial Terminal, located at 6661 W. Imperial Highway, Los Angeles.

The proposed project provides for certain improvements identified in the approved LAX Master Plan, particularly as related to development of new aircraft gates at TBIT.  These new gates support the airport’s ability to effectively and efficiently accommodate New Large Aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, Boeing 787 and Boeing 747-8.  In addition, the project calls for substantial improvements related to the concourses and central core area of TBIT.

Key elements of the project include:

§         Construction of new north and south concourses at TBIT west of the existing concourses, which would be removed.

§         Construction of nine aircraft gates and associated loading bridges and apron areas, along the west side of the new TBIT concourses.

§         Relocation and consolidation of existing aircraft gates along the east side of TBIT.

§         In conjunction with demolition of the existing concourses at TBIT, 10 new aircraft gates and associated loading bridges and apron areas would be constructed along the east side of the new concourses, to replace the 12 existing gates.

§         Renovation and enlargement of the existing U.S. Customs and Border Protection areas within the central core of TBIT.

§         Construction of secure passenger corridors between Terminals 3 and 4, and TBIT.

§         Relocation of existing Taxiways S and Q to the west. (They are presently located in the area proposed for the new concourses and gates.)

Potentially significant environmental effects that may result from the proposed project include traffic, air quality, noise, surface water quality and biological resources.

The Notice of Preparation is available online at http://www.ourlax.org/, Tom Bradley International Terminal Reconfiguration Project, and will be posted in the office of the Los Angeles City Clerk.  For more information or to request a copy, call (310) 646-7614.

Responses to the Notice of Preparation should be received no later than Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009.  Responses should be sent to Dennis Quilliam, City Planner, Los AngelesWorldAirports, 7301 World Way West, 3rd Floor, Los Angeles, CA90045.
