LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AMONG NATION'S BEST
FOR ON-TIME FLIGHT ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE PERFORMANCE

(Los Angeles, California – August 24, 2009) Los AngelesInternationalAirport(LAX)  ranked second among the nation’s 15 busiest airports in terms of the fewest delays experienced by its passengers on domestic arriving and departing flights, according to statistics released by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT).

On-time performance by LAX’s 15 domestic carriers was the best 12-month period since 2004.  Between July 2008 and June 2009, domestic departures were on schedule 84 percent of the time, with 82 percent of LAX flights making a timely arrival. Such a performance placed LAX behind only DetroitMetropolitan-WayneCountyAirport among the nation’s busiest airports, with LAX ranking seventh among all U.S. passenger airports for departures and eighth in arrival performance.

The DOT defines a flight delay as one that occurs when a flight either arrives or departs 15 or more minutes than scheduled.

In 2008, LAX served 59.8 million passengers, the nation’s third busiest airport.  Detroit, with 35.1 million passengers, holds the rank of 13th in the nation.

Los Angeles World Airports is the Los Angeles city department that owns and operates a system of three airports:  Los Angeles International (LAX), LA/Ontario International (ONT) and Van Nuys (VNY).  Each airport makes a distinct contribution to the strength of the    system as it provides a high level of safety, security and service for its customers, communities and stakeholders.  LAX is the sixth busiest airport internationally.
