ARTISTS EXPLORE THE INTRICATE IN LAX EXHIBIT

(Los Angeles, California – June 16, 2009)  Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs,announces a nine-artist group exhibit of Los Angeles-based artists on display at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The exhibit, entitled “of Intricacy,” features artwork that is meticulously developed through accumulation, layering, and additive processes. Independent curator, artist, and writer John O’Brien served as the guest curator.

The exhibition is located in Terminal 1 on the Departures Level in three areas: in the hallways leading to Gates 1 and 2, and in a display case along the main corridor. All three areas are on view for ticketed passengers. The exhibition is free and on display through October 30, 2009.

The nine artists included in the exhibit are Nena Amsler, Daniel Brodo, April Dunham, Jacqueline Freedman, Erika Lizée, Cielo Pessione, Joseph Santarromana, Elizabeth Saveri, and Hoàng Vu.  Artworks on display consist of paintings (oil, acrylic and watercolor), wire sculptures, digital media, collages, and fiber sculptures. “This exhibit concentrates on artists and artworks where the labor intensity and visible elaboration of work activates the viewer’s fascination about how these works came to be,” said O’Brien. “I wanted to focus on artists who make art that is involved with how things are built up through accretion and additions.”

In O’Brien’s view, the artworks encourage observers to engage their imaginations and delve into the intricate and complex visual possibilities. In 2008, O’Brien curated an exhibition based on the same premise by these artists at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, in Los Angeles.

            The purpose of the Art Exhibits Program at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT), is to educate and entertain the traveling public, while emphasizing a cultural experience highlighting what makes Los Angeles unique and interesting. Exhibits may be historic, popular, artistic, or graphic design in nature and may arise from museums, fine art, archives, environment, or other fields. Exhibits are on display in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, and Terminals 2 and 4 at LA/Ontario.
