FRIDAY REPORT, April 16: LAX flight cancellations due to volcanic ash

Media Response Statement
Flight operations to the U.K. and Europe were still disrupted today, Friday, April 16, due to the temporary closure of the air space over the U.K. and parts of Europe, resulting from the volcanic eruption in Iceland on Wednesday.  By this evening, 10 arriving flights and 13 departure flights (23 total) were cancelled by airlines serving London/Heathrow, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Zurich (the last two departure/destination cities were added today).  The estimated number of passengers affected today was 6,500.

Yesterday, Thursday, April 15, 8 arriving flights and 9 departure flights (17 total) were cancelled, impacting approximately 4,500 passengers.

The combined, two-day impacts are 40 total arrival and departure flight cancellations, impacting approximately 11,000 passengers.

Passengers booked on flights to the U.K. and Europe are advised to check with their airlines on flight status before coming to the airport.
