AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS OKAY SOUND-INSULATION CONTRACT FOR HOUSING

(Los Angeles, California – November 1, 2010)  The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today awarded a contract to Karabuild Development, Inc. of Inglewoodfor a portion of the work being undertaken as part of the Los AngelesInternationalAirport (LAX) Residential Soundproofing Program.

The contract, for $1,532,666, covers sound-insulation modifications on 54 dwellings consisting of mostly single family units, and two duplexes and two 3-unit apartment buildings, all within Los Angeles City Council District 11.

The overall LAX Residential Soundproofing Program includes approximately 9,400  residences in the Los Angeles communities of South Los Angeles, Westchester and Playa del Rey with a recorded Community Noise Equivalent Level (CNL) of 65 decibels or higher.

Contractors typically install double-paned windows, solid-core doors, fireplace doors and dampers, attic baffles, insulation and heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) to achieve a noise level reduction of approximately one-half in a home’s interior.

The 54 dwelling units in this project will bring the total units completed, under construction, or approved by the Board to date to 6,860.  The remaining 2,540 units are either in the design phase, awaiting commencement of design, or the owners have not responded or declined to participate.

The program is administered by Los Angeles World Airports' Residential Soundproofing Bureau.  Residents may call (424) 646-7444 for further information.
