LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO IMPROVE VITAL INTERSECTIONS BORDERING EL SEGUNDO FOR MITIGATING CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC IMPACTS
(Los Angeles, California – June 28, 2010) Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today approved a $1,331,979 contract to the Griffith Company, Brea,California, for improvements to two intersections of Imperial Highway that border Los AngelesInternationalAirport (LAX) and the City of El Segundo. The improvements are designed to mitigate the impacts of construction traffic related to the Bradley West Project, a three-year, $1.545-billion modernization of the Tom Bradley International Terminal.
At a total project cost of $2,165,776 (including engineering, inspection, permits and other construction costs), the project includes improving roadway capacity at two intersections affected by the Bradley West construction traffic activities and enhancing safety by adding temporary traffic signals, and improving a driveway on the east side of Pershing Drive, just south of World Way West, a road used primarily by airport workers.
The first intersection improvement includes creating an additional left-turn lane in the westbound direction of Imperial Highway onto Main Street that will require upgrading existing storm drains, street lights, traffic signals, and other related improvements.
The second intersection improvement includes constructing an additional right-turn lane in the westbound direction of Imperial Highway onto Pershing Drivethat will require upgrading existing traffic signals, relocating street lights, and other related improvements.
Also included in the project is construction of a new driveway and installation of temporary traffic signals to improve access into an existing parking lot on the east side of Pershing Drive, just south of World Way West, which will be used for construction worker parking.
The Bradley West Project is one element of the overall LAX modernization plan and is composed of approximately 1.25 million square feet of new building area, including food/beverage and retail concessions, new premium lounge space and other passenger amenities. In addition, the new concourses will contain 15 new boarding gates and enlarged passenger seating/holdroom areas designed to accommodate new-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 super-jumbo jet and the Boeing B787 Dreamliner. The Bradley West Project is the biggest public works project in the City’s history and is expected to create 4,000 construction-related jobs during the three-year project schedule.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the Bradley West Project in last October. During the approval process, the City Council also approved the Environmental Impact Report (EIR), which included these and other mitigation measures. The EIR concluded that construction traffic traveling to and from the primary construction staging areas would have a significant impact on these two intersections of Imperial Highway throughout the construction phase of the Bradley West Project, and committed specific measures to mitigate these impacts.
