NEW ART EXHIBITIONS UNVEILED IN TERMINALS FOR THE TRAVELING PUBLIC AT LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LAX)

(Los Angeles, California – August 11, 2011)  Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, unveils four new art exhibitions at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by Los Angeles artists Susan Logoreci, Nancy Macko, Marshall Roemen, Stephanie Sheppard and Julio Sims.  Exhibitions featuring mixed-media paintings, digital murals, prints, photographs and mixed-media installations are currently on display through Oct. 2011 in Terminals 1 and 3, for the traveling public.

ArtistJulio Sims’ exhibit titled Icarus’ Ascent in the Terminal 1 art display case depicts figures which appear to gesture to passengers in American Sign Language or demonstrate a calm Yoga pose through life-size digital portraits.  Terminal 1, Gate 2 features Los Angeles in Abstract Architecture in which photographer Stephanie Sheppard focuses on building features to contrast historic and modern design.

In Terminal 1 on the Lower/Arrivals Level, artist Susan Logoreci composed two 28-foot long by 9-foot high vinyl prints, originally drawn in colored pencil, representing a subjective panorama of downtown Los Angeles.  The Arrival Hallway in Terminal 3 features three large-scale, mixed-media paintings by Marshall Roemen.  Artist and Scripps College Digital Art Program Director Nancy Macko exhibits a series of monoprints that allude to memory loss in Terminal 3 art display case.

Initiated in 1990, the purpose of the Public Art and Exhibitions Program at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is to educate and entertain the traveling public at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) and the LAX FlyAway Bus Terminal at Van Nuys Airport.  The program showcases local and regional artists through temporary exhibitions and permanent public art installations, which enhance and humanize the overall travel experience for millions every year.

LAX is the seventh busiest airport in the world and third in the United States, offering more than 565 daily flights to 81 domestic cities and over 1,000 weekly nonstop flights to 65 international destinations on over 75 carriers.  In 2010, LAX served over 59 million passengers processed over 1.9 million tons of air cargo valued at nearly $77 billion, and handled 575,835 aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs).  LAX is part of a system of three Southern California airports – along with LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys general aviation – that are owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles that receives no funding from the City’s general fund.  For up-to-date information on all LAX happenings follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/LAX_Official and Facebook www.facebook.com/laxairport .
