PHOTOGRAPHS PRESENT A FRESH VIEW OF LOS ANGELES IN NEW LAX EXHIBIT IN TERMINAL 2

(Los Angeles, California – June 11, 2013)  Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, announces a new large-scale artwork by Los Angeles artist Barbara Strasen at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) beginning June 22.  Flow and Glimpse features six groups of lenticular murals featuring Strasen’s color photographs, presenting surprising views and unexpected impressions of the Los Angeles region.  The exhibit is part of Influx: Art at LAX , a celebration of transforming LAX’s public spaces into art spaces.  It will be on public display in the Terminal 2 atrium (Upper/Departures Level) until 2015.

Flow and Glimpse is comprised of 54 panels that contain two images—one a “flow” of rich textures and the other a specific “glimpse” of Los Angeles—placed side by side using lenticular lenses so the visible images change in response to the location of the viewer.  The textures for the “flows” represent characteristics of Los Angeles, such as bougainvillea flowers or giant sequins.  The “glimpses” are configured in six thematic groups: Shadows, Signs, Skies, Reflections, Bods, and Glam. Strasen’s artwork is intended to provide a fresh look at Los Angeles and its relationship to contemporary life.

“The themes for the ‘flows’ and ‘glimpses’ evolved after taking 2,500 new photographs for the project and reviewing them along with my existing photographs and artworks,” says Strasen.

Strasen works in painting, photography and installation, creating multi-image artworks that reflect upon the complexities of daily life. She has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, curated exhibitions, and achieved numerous public and private commissions. There will be a forthcoming survey exhibition of her art at the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, California, in 2014. About Los Angeles International Airport

LAX is the sixth busiest airport in the world and third in the United States, offering 680 daily flights to 96 domestic cities and 930 weekly nonstop flights to 59 cities in 30 countries on 63 commercial air carriers.  It ranks 14th in the world and fifth in the U.S. in air cargo tonnage processed.  In 2012, LAX served nearly 63.7 million passengers, processed over 1.9 million tons of air cargo valued at over $86.9 billion, and handled 605,480 aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs).  An economic impact study in 2011 reported that operations at LAX generated 294,400 jobs in Los Angeles County with labor income of $13.6 billion and economic output of more than $39.7 billion.  This activity added $2.5 billion to local and state revenues.  LAX is part of a system of three Southern California airports – along with LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys general aviation – that are owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles that receives no funding from the City’s general fund.
