TRAVEL ADVISORY LAX CONDITIONS FOLLOWING FAA GROUND STOP IN LOS ANGELES REGION

TRAVEL ADVISORY
LAX Conditions Following FAA Ground Stop in Los Angeles Region

Update #3/FINAL at 8:30 p.m.:

After completing an assessment of flight operations of the nearly 60 passenger airlines at LAX, LAX Airport Operations reports the following impacts resulting from today’s ground stop through midnight tonight:

1.       ARRIVING FLIGHTS TO LAX:  A total of 27 cancellations, 212 delays, and 27 diversions to other airports

2.       DEPARTING FLIGHTS FROM LAX:  A total of 23 cancellations (primarily due to aircraft were unavailable with cancelled arrival flights) and 216 delays.

3.       No international arriving or departing flights were cancelled.

4.       The number of passengers on the 50 total arriving and departing cancelledflights is estimated at nearly 6,800.

5.       The number of passengers on the 455 total arriving and departing delayedflights is estimated in the tens of thousands.

6.       Departure operations are expected to return to normal by 11 p.m.

7.       Arrival operations are expected to return to normal by 12 midnight.

Because motorists waiting for arriving passengers remain in the terminals, Parking Structures 3, 4, 5, and 6 (across from the same-numbered terminals) reach capacity intermittently, and therefore, these structures intermittently close and re-open.  Motorists are advised to use Parking Structures 1, 2, 7; LAX Economy Lot C at 96th Street and Sepulveda Boulevard and take the free LAX shuttle bus to/from the terminals; or wait in their cars in the LAX Cellphone Waiting Lot adjacent to Lot C until their arriving parties call to say they are at terminal curbside.

This is a reminder that motorists are not allowed to park and wait terminal curbside.  Terminal curbside is for loading and unloading passengers only.  All passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the status of their flights before coming to LAX.

Update #2 at 5:55 p.m.:

Airlines at LAX are reporting an estimated 10 cancellations and 110 departure delays throughout tonight.  Ten arriving flights that diverted to other airports during the ground stop – including five international flights -- are expected to arrive at LAX in the next few hours.  Because motorists waiting for arriving passengers remain in the terminals, Parking Structures 3, 4, 5, and 6 (across from the same-numbered terminals) are approaching capacity, and motorists are advised to use Parking Structures 1, 2, 7; LAX Economy Lot C at 96th Street and Sepulveda Boulevard; or wait in their cars in the LAX Cellphone Waiting Lot adjacent to Lot C.

All passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the status of their flights before coming to LAX.

Update #1 at 4 p.m.:

According to the FAA at LAX, they have lifted their ground stop.  All arriving flights that were inside the FAA’s Los Angeles Flight Center’s airspace at the time of the ground stop landed at LAX.  About 10 inbound flights that were outside the L.A. airspace diverted to other airports, and are expected to depart from the diversion airports to LAX in the next few hours and, therefore, will be delayed for several hours before they arrive at LAX.  Over 30 departing flights were held on the ground during the ground stop and experienced up to two hours delay.  All departure flights are now released and will depart with an expected one-hour delay.  All passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the status of their flights before coming to LAX.
